Hello everyone!
Let me start with an apology for not posting anything in so long. Things have been a little crazy recently and the little time I had available I was working on my first video, which you can see at the end of this post. Ta-Da! 🙂 Hopefully I’ll be able to publish a little faster in the future.
First, let me tell you: working with video is a LOT of work… Aside from post-processing the regular stuff you do in photography, you also have to put more time into preparing the story, checking the timing, transitions, text, getting the right music (which involves dealing with copyright issues, etc). Unfortunately I didn’t think about the storyline all that well during the trip so there are a few holes that I had to fill with stills. I also had to learn how to use a new program to edit the video and, like any novelty, there’s a learning curve involved. Finally, I created a new channel on YouTube just to host this and any future videos, so be sure to check that out and subscribe to it. Also, don’t forget to like our Facebook page, so you get notified each time a new post is published here on the blog.
Despite all the challenges, creating videos is fun! To me, playing with this different media is just like using different types of surfaces or inks (if I was a painter), or sculpting different materials, or playing different instruments… you get the idea. I plan to get more use out of the little GoPro in the future. We’ll see how it turns out!
For this first project I wanted to showcase a little bit of our vacations last Summer, so here it goes.
Janu and I travelled from Edmonton to Vancouver by car, on the way to Brenna and Aaron’s wedding. This was such a great trip: we went fishing, camping, surfing. We also saw many new places, spent time with great people and enjoyed delicious food.
It was quite the drive (a little over 3,000 Km in 10 days), but the roads were in most cases very good and well signalled (Except for those 60 Km of gravel between Port Alberni and Poett Nook when we went fishing. No, seriously. That was the worst road I’ve seen in my life, hands down).
There were many different photo oportunities during the trip and it was really fun and challenging to take so many different types of pictures.
In Tofino we went to the beach one night and I figured it was a great chance to play with long exposures. I had a couple of glow-sticks on my bag and we did have some fun! Light painting is harder than it seems (especially numbers, haha). We had some crazy light-battles too.
In BC, we also had the chance to see a lot of wildlife. I have always been attracted by the grandeur of the bald eagles and was excited to be able to photograph them. We also saw seals, whales, herons, geese, swans, raccoons, deer… The juvenile bald eagle pictured here was part of a group of four, spotted by Janu when we were on the road.
Driving through Western Canada we also saw many beautiful places, little towns, farms, forests, and at night, gorgeous dark skies. This country is really beautiful, all you have to do is leave your couch for a bit and enjoy what it has to offer.
